Pepper Adams

Complete Recordings
Teddy Charles

Teddy Charles's best album. In addition to a great line-up of soloists, it is the composers (Charles himself, Giuffre, Brookmeyer, Waldron, Evans, Russell) who make this a thoroughly interesting, classic collection. No routine soloing. Very good sound. Unfortunately, three extra tracks which appeared on an earlier Atlantic CD are not included here. Still: excellent value!

Mingus Ah Um
Charles Mingus

The first track says it all: "Better get it into Your Soul." This is soul-stirring, head-thumping, body-shaking stuff. Insistent, penetrating, simply inspired. Hard to compare it to anything, really, although it has elements of bebop, blues, gospel, and that crazy no-holds-barred spirit of funk. One of my top ten jazz cuts.

Complete Legendary Sessions
Chet Baker / Bill Evans

Although Chet Baker and Bill Evans were both highly lyrical and introspective players who could have made a marvelous team, they only recorded together on a couple of occasions. Their complete collaborations are included on this CD.
