This CD has subtle and inventive music from pianist Bernardo Sassetti. The solo piano performances are mostly Sassetti's originals. Some are sophisticated and accessible enough to possibly be covered by other advanced improvisers, while others are one-chord ruminations. In addition to performing his own songs, Sassetti creates fresh variations on several standards along with witty renditions of Thelonious Monk's "In Walked Bud". In general, his interpretations are performed at slower tempos (sometimes out-of-tempo) and his improvisations develop gradually. This thoughtful set, which would have benefited from the inclusion of liner notes, grows in interest with each listen. Review by Scott Yanow
