Spark!
Marty Ehrlich & Myra Melford

Jazz duos don’t come much better suited than Marty Ehrlich and Myra Melford, a pair of composer-instrumentalists whose imaginations are exponentially larger than their egos. As an acoustic pianist, Melford has a percussive style and a soulful, near-gospel, sensibility. Ehrlich, on alto sax and clarinet, frequently erupts with birdlike elation and alacrity.

Nigh & The Music
Fred Hersch

His first trio album since the '90s, Night & the Music finds journeyman jazz pianist Fred Hersch, along with bassist Drew Gress and drummer Nasheet Waits, delving into an atmospheric and intimate mix of originals and standards. Allison's sextet, Medicine Wheel, is an outgrowth of the JCC.

Blue Plate Special
Will Bernard

Dirty and funky, as you'd expect when you get these superstar groove masters in the same recording studio. There's so much going on in each track that you'll never want to go back to normal funk bands. On tracks like 571, it seems like Bernard and Medeski are seeing who can add the most grit and color to their parts. Yet Bernard's compositional chromaticism and catchy hooks are still there.
