Portuguese saxist Rodrigo Amado is one of those under-recognized giants who has out a dozen dynamic discs on the Clean Feed, European Echoes and Not Two labels. Rodrigo always chooses great musicians to work with (Dennis, Aaron & Stefan Gonzalez, Taylor Ho Bynum, Kent Kessler & Paal Nilssen-Love).

Over the last few years, young saxist Jon Irabagon has been gaining more recognition with a number of fine discs as a leader, a collaborator (with Barry Altschul, Mary Halvorson, Dave Douglas & John Yao) or as a member of Mostly Other People Do the Killing. During their seminal career as a group, The Funkees, as one of the premier Igbo bands, were the darlings of Eastern Nigeria. The Biafran War was still fresh on the minds of all Igbo people, so their upbeat music was welcomed with open arms. In a sense, one could even look at it as part of the rebuilding process in the years following the war.

It’s finally time to break the news here at Secret Stash Records about something we’ve been working on for nearly a year. We have been freaking out about finally being able to unveil the cover and give you the lowdown on our biggest release to date!

It was with great sadness that I heard of John Tchicai’s passing in October of 2012. I’d been familiar with his music since the early 1990’s, when as a high school saxophonist I first heard him on recordings with John Coltrane, Archie Shepp, Albert Ayler, and Don Cherry that truly changed my own life path.

The released of the cd “Provoke” is the result of a three day series of concerts, by a Ken Vandermark’s new project, during the commemoration, in Lisbon, of the 10th anniversary of the label Clean Feed. This is it: Made to Break, a quartet shared with electronicist Christoff Kurzmann, electric bassist Devin Hoff and drummer Tim Daisy.
